All volunteers are required to have a criminal record check, however having a record will not necessarily mean that you cannot volunteer.

Description of Volunteer Positions:

Courage to Continue (C2C) Program: C2C Program volunteers will work with youth members participating in the Work Adjustment Program (WAP) while they perform their job duties. This may require volunteers to perform duties with the youth such as renovation of Centre space, working at the Furniture Store, general cleaning duties, landscaping, etc. C2C volunteers are crucial for modeling appropriate workplace behaviours and engaging youth in the tasks at hand while providing support with mental health and addiction issues. You will work closely with not only youth but the Program Supervisors and Addiction Worker to ensure that participants are receiving the support they need.

Time commitment required: The C2C Program runs Mon-Fri from 8:30-4:30. Volunteers may choose the amount of time that they are able to volunteer, however a weekly commitment is required to maintain consistency for participants with a minimum volunteer time period of 6 months.

Mentorship Program: Mentors may choose to be matched with a single youth in recovery to spend time with engaging in recreational activities, chats over coffee, helping with life skills, etc. in which the scheduling and frequency of visits can be determined by the mentor and mentee.

Mentors may also choose to be available to youth who are interested in learning a variety of skills in numerous fields such as trades (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc.), culinary skills, retail, sewing, graphic design, computer skills, music, etc. Mentors will have demonstrated skills in a specific area(s) and be willing to work with our members to develop these skills in themselves. This may be one-on-one format or group depending on the number of youth interested, and mentors must be patient and able to communicate in effective ways that are appropriate for working with youth in recovery.

Time commitment required: Ideally mentors will be available to visit the Centre once per week for 2-4 hours depending on the activity to be done. This will also depend on interest levels of our members.

Supervision of Centre Activities/Youth Engagement: These volunteers will be available at the Centre for our movie nights, game nights, free art time, musical jam sessions, and any other programs we have running! Volunteers may choose a specific activity to supervise based on their own talents and interests, or may choose to simply assist in any activities we have going on based on availability. This position allows for creativity in developing activities for youth members to enjoy (feel like organizing a group hike or Couch to 5K running group? Go for it!)

Time commitment required: This will be determined according to preferences of volunteers and current activities happening at the Centre. Time commitments may range from one hour per week, to 5 days per week if you’d like!

Fitness/Recreation Instructors & Supervisors: Mental health and addiction recovery is greatly improved when physical activity is implemented into a recovery plan. Experienced Fitness Instructors at Reach provide a weekly fitness class to members and Recreation Supervisors coach members in sports or other recreational activities.

Time commitment required: 2-8 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months. Fitness classes will run 1 hour/week & Gym Supervisors will likely be required for a minimum of 4 hours/week which may be done in shifts or blocks.

Special Events: These volunteers will be available for various community or Centre events held throughout the year. Volunteers may be required to plan events, help with promotion, setup/tear down, etc.

Childcare Volunteers: Some of our youth members have children and are unable to find childcare to be able to attend Reach Centre groups or events. Childcare volunteers must have experience working with children of all ages and be able to supervise groups of children at one time.

Time commitment required: This position tends to be more ‘on call’ as childcare is not always needed for Reach events or groups. Volunteers should have a relatively flexible schedule for this position.

Centre Help: These volunteers will come to the Reach Centre periodically or regularly to assist with ground maintenance, grocery shopping, cleaning, shoveling, etc. These volunteers are crucial for allowing regular programming to run at the Centre as it allows staff to focus primarily on youth!

Time commitment required: This is a flexible position that could be performed during the day or evenings.

Public Education/Social Media/Marketing/Event Promotion: These volunteers will be crucial for our outreach and advocacy work in the community, and connecting with other community organizations to develop collaborative relationships to better serve our youth! Social media is crucial for getting events out to the public, creating awareness of mental health and addictions, etc. and we’re always looking for new content to spread throughout our network!

Time commitment required: This is a flexible position, some of which may even be done from home!

Volunteer Drivers: Some youth will need transportation to Reach events and groups, appointments, etc. These volunteers must have a valid PEI driver’s license and a clean driving abstract.

Time commitment required: These volunteers will be needed on an ‘on call’ basis but the schedule is also quite flexible!
